Rat Terriers - Pictures - Are They Easy to Train?

Rat Terriers are smart dogs and can be taught a lot of tricks. Yet, they tend to be obstinate and need a firm hand in training. Obedience training is highly recommended for this breed like for other terrier-type dogs. Experienced trainers state that Rat Terriers are capable dogs and will only obey consistent owners.

As puppies, Rat Terriers should get the basic idea of who the owner is. They should be taught to come up at the first request and get along well with children. Kids that are instructed on the point of treating a dog will find a devoted friend in a Rat Terrier. The breed is generally playful and has energy in abundance.

Special attention should be devoted to teaching Rat Terriers to treat other pets in a friendly way. It should be kept in mind that natural instincts will hardly be eliminated in the Rat Terrier. Any representative of the breed has a liking for chasing cats and is not very good with smaller animals. It is the task of the owner to successfully socialize a Rat Terrier and teach it good manners.

Rat Terriers are not recommended for novice owners. One should have some experience with dogs to have success when training a Rat Terrier. If you are new to the breed there is some sense to contact a Rat Terrier club and ask for advice. The help from professional trainers is always a good way of training Rat Terriers.
