However, Rat Terriers are valued mostly for their hunting abilities. These dogs were bred from hunting breeds and have a long history as vermin and foxhunting dogs. Rat Terriers are used mainly in southern states of America. They serve man as ratters and are said to be wonderful squirrel dogs.

It may seem that the present condition of agriculture with the use of advanced methods of vermin control leaves no room for these small dogs. Nevertheless, no means is perfect and the use of modern techniques leads to undesirable effects. Hence, Rat Terriers are still widely used for their original functions.

Squirrel dogs ease the hunter's task during a hunting session and are a great help in finding a squirrel in the tree. Rat Terriers that stem from good breeding lines are taught from an early age. Training starts by introducing squirrels to a Rat Terrier and encouraging it to get a squirrel. Rat Terriers should be taught to find, chase, and tree a squirrel. After that, the dog's bark lets the hunter know where the animal is.

Rat Terriers are rather intelligent dogs that are eager to learn and thrive on a lot of activities. They need a considerable amount of exercise. Their needs can be met by the means of participating in canine sports. Rat Terriers are said to make good agility and tunnel dogs, and do well in obedience.
